NaNo Prep - Description Setting 1

I'm not the best at describing anything, and setting is the worst. But here is the setting described and once i figure the technology out I'll post the very bad drawing.

(Note: I like drawing trees, so that's a good reason this is the first setting even though the number 1 main character isn't even in the scene where the reader will get to experience this location.)

The base was one of the largest trees in the realm. It was broad, old and very strong with a number of smaller trees, in comparison, used as support mechanisms for the foundation of the treetop tavern. The foliage of the center tree, with the smaller trees like miniature copies surrounding it, had different levels that started with a small ring of branches and leaves that became larger until the top level that loomed above the roof. Green leaves had a lush coloring with the dark undersides having an emerald tone that reached up to yellow-green tips and a mix in between to manage the side that received some light that seeped through the top and from the sides where trees did not exist.

There were other sections of trees, all in clusters that were separated by sections of bareness that created the true setting of the location. The sections helped to create a method of walkways that were strung in complicated methods in order to reach the lofty tavern. It did not look like a good place for any form of intoxication, and yet there was only one record of someone ever falling.

But it was the tavern, the mixture of natural and human, that stood out. Its appearance from the ground was a large mass on top of an otherwise simple tree. But when one made it to the same level as the tavern, the intricacy of the wood work, even on the outside walls, was obvious. The building appeared to be carved out of one piece, even though that wasn't the case. On the inside, there was a strange combination of wood, metal and a few glass items used merely for decoration. Overall, the fire hazard may have been high but the end result was well worth it. Compared to any other tavern, it was one of the most beautiful and made it well worth the long climb from tree to tree, rope and pathways combined.

At First Sight Blogfest

I almost missed this blogfest in the midst of hectic homework issues, but here it is. The host is Jacee Drake. Check out the blog link to see the other entries in the blogfest.  Because of homework and two quizzes, I'll have to comment on other people's entries on Friday.

About the Blogfest:
"On October 7th, post an entry describing in about 500 words the moment your MC meets someone of importance for the first time. Could be friend, lover, enemy, long-lost parent, sibling... whoever is important to them - at that point in their life - and the emotion and reaction to the encounter your MC goes through."

This blogfest is the perfect opportunity to skip a huge section of the first part in my blog novel, Cinder Story, and introduce the Prince character. I haven't quite figured out the character's actual name, which will be obvious in the entry below, so be warned. That will be worked on later, I hope.

Entry from Cinder Story:

Sweet black coffee had a heavenly type secret because the color of the liquid always seemed like it forgot to give the drinker a hint as to the sugary goodness that lurked underneath. Of course, none of that mattered when the scalding heat burned Jack's tongue. Cursing, he set the tall paper cup down on the black table top of the coffee shop. It was stupid to drink the coffee right away but he was distracted as he watched the open doors of the shop for signs of his new assignment.

While the outing was a nice change of pace from the shopping, drama and glitter that usually filled his days, he couldn't help but feel apprehensive. The father setting up the daughter for a potential mate didn't fit into the modern philosophy of dating and having to meet the guy first to check him out was plain weird. Yet, there he sat, in a coffeeshop waiting for the Prince of (insert cool business that his father runs but he is part owner of) to arrive. He'd done some initial research after the uncomfortable email conversation he'd had with the guy posing as Ella. The list of interests he'd been given in one email had read like a poorly written online dating profile and was only missing the faked line, "enjoys long walks on the beach." And the other research didn't provide much information on the personal side of Prince's life. Despite his gossip appeal, he'd managed to stay away from media for the most part. There were only a few pictures available, leaving Jack unsure of who would be arriving.

Once his coffee was cool enough to drink, Jack returned to sipping the liquid as he watched the door with only the occasional glance at his phone to check the time. It seemed Prince wasn't into punctuality since he was already ten minutes late.

Twenty minutes after the schedules meet session a group of males in gym clothing entered the coffee shop. At first, Jack shrugged them off until he took a closer look at the last one to come through the door. The young man in black and gray gym clothes that he began to stare at was tall, muscular but not overly so. His dusty blonde hair was short and had a slight wave motion to it.

Enjoying the view, Jack felt a slight panic when the guy let the group and walked over to his table.

"Are you," the blonde glanced at a fancy blackberry phone as he spoke, "Jack?"

"Yes," he tentatively responded, trying to look him over again without it being overly obvious as a sudden familiarity crossed his mind. "Are you..."

"Prince," the man interjected. "That would be me."

In order to hide his panic and the electricity of attraction he'd felt during his first staring session, Jack had to throw something out to keep a conversation going. He couldn't believe the words even as they fell out of his mouth. "So, you really think you're cool enough for that name?"

Seeming to take the question well, Prince chuckled. "Not really but it's what people call me."

NaNo Prep - Audience

Today's assignment is to figure out the audience for the novel. Since I'm not to sure on the exact break down of people who read epic fantasy, I kind of rambled for a paragraph but it's better than nothing.

Who is the audience for the novel?

The general audience is for the readers that love epic/high fantasy. It's overall range includes high schoolers and adults, with a focus on adults but a reality being some high schoolers prefer the adult fantasy section over YA, including male readers. Epic fantasy is one of those love it or don't care for it types of subgenres of fantasy. While the subgenre has its set of readers, to get a little more specific, my book will have a little smaller audience because of sexual orientation. One of the main characters is gay, another is in denial and one of the mixed cities is run by a couple of lesbians. So, that factor may limit the audience. I also have my own take on elves, (short hair anyone?), and those that don't like change won't want to read the books. But that still leaves a big enough audience. The main targe for this novel, however, is me. I'm writing this book for me first and no one else.

NaNo Prep - Protagonist Story

Here is a backstory involving the main character from the last post. This is when he was a teen (well, whatever is like a teen for elves).

Feyn's Crusade  (or quest, now i'm thinking quest is better)

The rustle of red and gold leaves caused the lone elf, Feynethom, to pause. He had to be close based upon the color patterns and the side of moss growth that existed on most of the aspen trees that grew as an indication of nearby running water. A light scent of sweet nectar drifted along a breeze that moved through the tree like a gentle dance. It is the magickal movements of nature that give away the secret of the land. He found it: the lost city of Thai-noren. Taking a deep breath of the flower sweet air, he took the few steps forward keeping him away from the greatest discory of centuries that lay just behind the break in the trees.

Sunlight shown through the clearing, momentarily blinding him from the rewarding sight of his find. He covered his eyes for a second and then let his eyes get accustomed to the new found light.

"Feyn?"

The familiar voice of his brother, Serothriol, pulled Feynethom from his fantasy. He blinked again and finally noticed exactly where he was. It was still the outskirts of the woodland city but the small clearing had nothing to do with the magick city he dreamed of one day discovering. Instead, it was a normal oak and pine circled opening. There his brother and his brother's best friend, were seated together on a fallen oak tree. Both looked surprised to see him.

"What are you doing?" Serothriol asked, moving a little bit on the log away from his friend by a few inches.

"Um," a light flaring of heat graced his skin. Even with it being his favorite brother, Feynethom couldn't stop the reaction to the question. Anyone else he'd have come up with a lie, but for them he admitted, "I was imagining what it'd be like to discover Thain-oren."

The friend chuckled. "Only you, Feyn, only you."

Feynethom did the mature thing and stuck his tongue out at him. He liked this friend but didn't always care for the teasing. Then he thought to ask, "What are you two doing out here?"

Serothriol shuffled his foot across a clump of dirt and weeds. "Not much. We're just relaxing before we have to go on another patrol mission of the border.

"Oh, right. How long do you have to be gone this time?"

"Not long," Serothriol picked up a leaf and then let it fall again. "Just a week and then we'll have a break. Maybe when we get back, we'll join you on your grand adventure."

"Promise?" Feynethom beamed. When he received an affirmative response he smiled and went back to pretending as he made his way home.

Two weeks had gone by but the patrol hadn't returned. Each night, Feynethom spent hours waiting on the edge of the city, waiting. Then it happened. A group of elves finally returned. Only two were missing: Serothriol and his friend, Mandethum.

NaNo Prep - Outline 1

Main character #1 Feynethom - a male woodland elf
#2 - a different kind of male elf from Starsatti (or however I spell it)
#3 - a short male human that tends to acquire items (yes, the typical thief character)
#4 - female dwarf
#5 & #6 - female humans

Feyn meets #3 in a village inn on his mission to find an ancient city where magical elves once lived in hopes that they hadn't been annihilated as the history books claimed. The human joins him on his quest after acquiring an ancient map that might have the location of the ancient city.

#2 and #4 meet in a treetop tavern. A group of humans come in with one mistaking the dwarf for an elf but his pals correct him. #2 has his ears covered so no one knows that he's an elf. The one human says he met an elf who was trying to find the ancient elven city.

#2 leaves to find the cit yas well, to make sure the others aren't taken by the cursed city. #4 insists on going with him.

Feyn and #3 find their way to the ancient city. It is abanonded with no signs of life in any way. The city is starting to decay and is very creepy. As their nerves start to get to them, #2 shows up and directs them away from the city just in time. They team up with #4, who was waiting for them.

#2 had plans to head to a fort that was being threatened by the antagonist. It's a human fort that has a long history of never losing a battle and if it were to fall to the enemy then hope may be lost. The other three decide to join him. In order to get to the fort they must travel through a number of small to medium size towns full of humans, many of which are occupied by the enemy.

They go around some of the occupied villages but get tired of sleeping on the ground. Near the woodlands there is a small to medium sized village where they decide to try staying at an inn for one night. There they meet #5 and #6.

When the elves cover gets blown they have no choice but to go into the woodlands, which they were trying to avoid. The elves let them into the village, though it's questionable at first because humans are usually not allowed in. Even with Feyn, they almost don't get in because he wasn't supposed to leave the village when he did.

The two elves have dinner with the King/Emporor type to explain their mission. He doesn't agree to send any elves to help but he does allow the whole group to live. #2's secret gets exposed.

After a little bit of time, and a small attack, the group leaves for the fort.

At first, the warriors of the fort are uncertain about the news the members bring, especially with the two elves in the group but the King/Leader of the fort doesn't have a problem with elves. They believe them after awhile and begin to prepare for battle with #2 in charge.

#2 has another secret that he personally reveals to a group after the leader refuses to give in to the anatagonist's demands.

Battle at fort occurs against difficult odds. They seems to struggle at first but as the battle ensues they lose very few people and appear to be winning. #2 gets knocked off when saving Feyn and gets carried away by the enemy. The battle ends with the fort seeming victorious but they lost something/someone valuable.

Plans are made for what to do next.

The end of book 1.

Bad News Blogfest

And another blogfest but this time I signed up for it more than two days before the event. Yay me. lol

The blogfest link: http://tgunwriter.blogspot.com/

Information: The blogfest is basically to write a scene or story where a character receives bad news. How they react to the bad news is key.

Cinder's Bad News:

In a much needed move of relief, Jack closed his bedroom door. If he had to hear about one more problem involving the wrong shade of lipstick or missing pink high heels he would consider jumping in front of a speeding city bus or maybe even a train. After finding the proper medication to relieve the pounding that reverberated within his skull, he settled down at his still rather empty desk to thumb through his mail from a few days ago.

One letter with the addresses written in a dark purple caught his attention among the pile of junk that he received on a regular basis. It was from his mother. He opened it up and skimmed for any important details since she sent him a letter once a week to keep him updated on family life. But this time he had to stop skimming in the middle when he came across an unusual bit of news almost doubling over the desk as he felt pain in his stomach as if he'd just been kicked.

The letter read: And I'm very sorry to be writing this but your Uncle Edgar passed away due to medical complications. The funeral is set for the 20th and I really should have called but your father thought it better that we not even tell you. But I know how much you liked your uncle and couldn't go without saying something. I'm sorry that because of this your won't be able to make it to the funeral but if you need anything, you know you can call me on my cell.

After that, he stopped reading the letter, setting it down on top of the pile of white unopened envelopes full of junk. He stared ahead at the bland white wall as he tried to come to terms with the news of the death of his favorite uncle. it was hard and as much as he didn't want to, he felt a few tears roll down his cheeks. Unable to control the emotion anymore, he let go and cried, doing his best to not make a sound.

"If you're not busy, I need a moment of your time."

Surprised, Jack wiped his cheeks off before turning around to see that his boss was standing in the now open doorway. He was holding a bunch of ties and had a questionable look on his face. All Jack could do was nod and hope his eyes weren't bloodshot. At least he didn't feel any more tears falling.

Mr. Daniel paused and then asked, "is this a bad time?"

"No, no." Jack jumped from his seat and had to immediatle grab the wooden desk chair to keep it from hitting the ground. "How may I help you?" His voice waivered a little.

Holding up a trio of ties in front of his white button-down shirt, he said. "My wife told me you are good with fashion stuff and I need to know which tie to wear to this fundraiser she is making me attend. She also said you know what she is wearing, if that helps pick one."

It took Jack over a minute to get his head in the right frame of mind to even remember which dress his wife had chsen with his help for the fundraiser. Checking out the options provided, he chose one that would compliment the outfit of his wife but wouldn't be an exact match or take too much atention away from her as he assumed she would prefer. "The blue-green one should be fine for the event."

"Thank you." Picking the chosen tie from the mess, Mr. Daniel smiled. "I don't really care for these events but it's better than arguing with the misses. We shouldn't be out too late and I promise that you won't be bothered anymore tonight." Then he added, "If you don't mind me asking: Are you okay?"

"Yes, sir," he nodded and did his best to sound confident in his answer even though he wasn't."I'm fine."
